Northwestern Illinois Continuum of Care Helping Homeless Individuals and Families |

|
The Northwestern Illinois Continuum of Care (The Continuum) works to prevent and end the devastation of homelessness. Participation is open to all those who have an interest in helping others. Membership in The Continuum includes government entities, elected officials, non profit organizations, financial institutions, businesses, housing developers, churches, health care providers, educators, homeless and formerly homeless persons.
Mission: The Continuum is committed to assisting individuals and families who become, or are at risk of becoming, homeless to regain housing stability and quality of life through a comprehensive service delivery system.
Who is Homeless? Homelessness has many faces, young and old, single and married. According to a 2004 report from the U.S. Conference of Mayors, officials estimate that single men make up 41% of the homeless population, families with children - 40%, single women - 14% and unaccompanied youth - 5%.
Gap Between Housing Costs and Wages: Many working households are at risk of homelessness due to the gap between housing costs and wages. In Illinois, an extremely low-income household (earning $19,637, 30% of the Area Median Income of $65,457) can afford monthly rent of no more than $491, while the Fair Market Rent for a two bedroom unit is $803. A family member would have to work 95 hours a week to afford the Fair Market Rent. Providing affordable housing is the key to ending homelessness!
Who Can Participate? Participation is open to all those who have an interest in helping others. Membership in the Continuum includes government entities, elected officials, non-profit organizations, financial institutions, businesses, housing developers, churches, health care providers, educators, homeless and formerly homeless people and many more.
Why Do We Need A Continuum? Having a continuum of services available ensures that a broad range of resources and housing types exist in order to respond to each individual’s needs. Membership in the Continuum allows for regular examination of services and analysis of gaps in the service delivery system. The role of Continuum members is to make sure that this broad range of services is delivered in an effective, cost-efficient, coordinated, and responsible way. |
